In April 2025, a major power outage hit Spain and Portugal, affecting 50 million people. No power, no internet, no mobile networks. In the coastal town of Altea, rumours spread faster than facts — because nobody could check. This experience shows why community communication networks matter.
Not because you need to panic — but because a simple text message over a mesh network could have told someone "it's not a cyberattack, it's a grid fault, power will be back in hours". Information is the most critical resource in a crisis.
MeshCore is an open-source LoRa mesh network that lets you send text messages without internet or mobile networks. It runs on batteries, solar power, and community-operated repeaters. In Hilversum, the city council voted almost unanimously to place a repeater on the town hall tower.
As Richard Otto writes: "MeshCore and similar systems only have real value if they are set up, tested, and used before a crisis. During a power outage is not the time to download an app and install firmware." Use it, enjoy it, treat it as fun tech — and it'll be there when you need it.
